Gua Kelam (Cave of Darkness) Perlis

Situated about 1 km from the town of Kaki Bukit which is northwest of Perlis. There is 370 metre long cave passage inside this cave. Gua Kelam is located within the Perlis State Park which borders with the Nakawan Range of Thailand. A wooden walkway suspended along the entire length of the well-lit passage allow visitors to view the formed stalagmites and stalactites.

The only path in is via a suspension wooden bridge made of an eight-feet wide wooden walkway. This bridge links Kaki Bukit to the Wan Tangga Valley, a valley on the opposite end of Gua Kelam. Back in 1935, an Englishman saw the water pathway as a brilliant method of transporting tin ore from a mine located near the stream entrance through the underground cavern to Kaki Bukit.

As you make your way through the cave, the sound of a swirling dark subterranean stream below reverberates forming a concerto with the squeaking bats and dripping water from the stalactites. It may sound a bit spooky, after all this was once the home of Stone Age men.

A' Famosa Fortress Melaka

It was built by the Portuguese in 1511 as a fortress. It is among the oldest surviving European architectural remains in Asia. The Porta de Santiago, a small gate house, is the only remaining part of the fortress still standing.

The fortress once consisted of long ramparts and four major towers. One was a four-story keep, while the others held an ammunition storage room, the residence of the captain, and an officers' quarters. Most of the village clustered in town houses inside the fortress walls. As Malacca's population expanded it outgrew the original fort and extensions were added around 1586.

The fort changed hands in 1641 when the Dutch successfully drove the Portuguese out of Melaka. The Dutch renovated the gate in 1670, which explains the logo "ANNO 1670" inscribed on the gate's arch. Above the arch is a bas-relief logo of the Dutch East India Company.

It was the only source of water in this area. In the old days, it is said, Hang Li Poh’s Well in Malacca never dried up even during the extreme droughts.

In 1511, Japanese invaded the place and they mixed poison in the water of Hang Li Poh’s Well, Malacca. Many people who drank the water of the well died from plague. A that time Malacca's administrative power just came in the hands of Sultan Alauddin Shah of Johor. The Sultan joined with the sultans of Perak and Pahang, and the Queen of Java fought against the Japanese. After that when Portuguese came here many Portuguese soldiers died after drinking the water from Hang Li Poh’s Well, Malacca. All these incidents are written in the book by the famous Portuguese historian, Diogo de Couto.

After that, in 1677, when Malacca became a Dutch colony, the Dutch sealed Hang Li Poh’s well with solid brick-walls in order to maintain their rights on it. Later, when Dutch rule was over, the well was opened. But it was turned in to a wishing well and it remains so until today. The place has become famous because of the wishing well as it fulfills the wishes of any one who drops a coin into it. It is said that whoever throws coins into Hang Li Poh’s Well, Malacca will return to Malacca again.
